Euflexxa® Injections for Joint Pain Relief at PRP

Euflexxa® is a synthetic form of Hyaluronic acid, a viscous substance found in synovial joints. Synovial joints are joints found between bones that move against each other, such as the knee, shoulder, hip, elbow, ankle and wrist. The moving parts in synovial joints make them particularly vulnerable to injury, and they may also become inflamed, causing arthritis. This results in pain, stiffness and swelling.  

Euflexxa® (1% Sodium Hyaluronate) is a therapeutic injection designed to help reduce joint pain caused by osteoarthritis. If stiffness or discomfort makes daily tasks – such as walking, climbing stairs, exercising or sitting for long periods – more difficult, Euflexxa® may help support smoother, more comfortable joint motion. It is a non-surgical treatment option designed to help patients improve joint function across various areas of the body.  

How Euflexxa® Helps 

Healthy joints contain hyaluronic acid – a key component of synovial fluid, which acts as a natural lubricant and shock absorber. With osteoarthritis, this fluid becomes thinner and less effective. Euflexxa® injections contain purified hyaluronic acid. 

Euflexxa® works when injected directly into the synovial cavity of the joint, improving function in the following ways:

Safety Information

Preparation

No Preparation is required. 

Please note that a referral is required from your doctor for each of the 3 Euflexxa injections. The initial injection may also include a joint aspiration (if required) and a cortisone injection to help achieve the best results. 

Please bring any previous imaging to your appointment. 

Special Precautions

In general, these are very safe techniques and have a very low complication rate.

Side effects and Risks:  

  • Bruising or mild-moderate temporary pain at the injection site
  • Transient joint swelling or stiffness
  • Infection is rare. If fever develops with joint pain, redness, swelling and warmth in the week following your injection, contact your doctor immediately
  • Response may be variable and not every patient has a positive response to the injection.

What happens during the procedure?

You will change into a gown and be comfortably positioned so that the area being examined is most accessible. 

You will lay on the CT scanner and a quick low dose scan of the joint to be injected will be undertaken to guide where the needle is to be directed. 

The area will be cleaned with a sterile solution and then a needle will be guided into the affected joint. Once the needle is confirmed in the correct position as shown by the scanner, the Euflexxa (and if applicable, steroid) will be injected and the needle removed. Once finished, a small bandaid will be applied and you are free to leave.  

How long does the procedure take?

Approximately 30 minutes. 

After your procedure

Avoid loading the injected joint or performing activities that worsen the symptoms during the first 48 hours 

Maximal effect is seen 8 weeks after commencing treatment, however, beneficial effects can extend beyond 6 months, and the treatment can be performed twice a year.
