PRP's 3D Breast Tomosynthesis Service Information

PRP now offers 3D breast tomosynthesis at many of our practices. This technology is also known as digital breast tomosynthesis (DBT) and 3D mammography. 3D breast tomosynthesis provides the most advanced mammographic imaging available for the early detection of breast cancer and thus can play an important role in improving breast cancer survival.

With 3D breast tomosynthesis, multiple images of each breast are taken from different angles using the latest digital technology. A state-of-the-art software program then produces multiple, fine 1mm slices of each breast. This provides a 3D view, allowing the radiologist to ‘scroll’ through each breast image, one layer at a time. This greatly reduces the effect of overlapping breast tissue that is seen on a standard 2D mammogram.

3D breast tomosynthesis allows for greater clarity in dense breasts, greater accuracy in characterising abnormalities and a better chance of detecting breast cancer at an earlier stage. This can lead to a better patient outcome.

Early studies overseas have shown up to a 43% increase in the breast cancer detection rate.

In addition, by eliminating the need for additional mammographic views, 3D breast tomosynthesis may lead to a shorter examination time and increased comfort for the patient. The end result is often fewer unnecessary biopsies and other tests.

Please advise us beforehand

Please advise us prior to the examination if you are or if you suspect you may be pregnant.

Preparation

No talcum powder, spray deodorant or body lotion to be worn.

What happens during the procedure

At PRP, you will receive a standard 2D mammogram and 3D breast tomosynthesis mammogram.

The experience of 3D breast tomosynthesis is very similar to a standard 2D mammogram. The female radiographer will position and compress your breasts, and the machine will acquire images from multiple angles. The only difference is that you may notice the X-ray machine sweep across your breast during the scan.

How long does it take?

There will be a minimal increase in the time of the examination compared to a standard 2D mammogram (approximately four seconds longer per compression).
Approx 30 mins

After your examination

There are no restrictions after having this procedure.

Your images and report

After your examination, the most pertinent images from your study will be available on the myPRP patient portal. A report, along with the images will be sent directly to your referring doctor. PRP will store digital copies of all studies on our secure database for comparison with any future examinations.

Please bring any previous X-rays with you.

It is important that you return to your doctor with your examination results. Whether they are normal or abnormal, your doctor needs to know promptly so that a management plan can be formulated.
